The design of this apartment narrates a story of profound transition and the desire to take root in Rio de Janeiro. The owner, an American lawyer who traded New York City’s frantic pace for Rio’s sun-drenched lifestyle, sought to transform this property into his official residence following a season of discovery across South America.
Estúdio Popa’s central concept focuses on a neutral, timeless base that explores a rich diversity of textures, serving as a welcoming sanctuary that reflects the resident’s cosmopolitan identity and cultural background. The architectural approach prioritizes spatial freedom, allowing travel mementos and the client’s personal collection to integrate naturally into the architecture.
The renovation involved a complete reconfiguration of the original floor plan to create a circular circulation, allowing for a free and intuitive flow between rooms. Eliminating the third bedroom was key to creating a generous primary suite with a walk-in closet, while the kitchen was expanded by incorporating part of an adjacent bathroom, becoming more functional and connected.
In the home office, a Murphy bed concealed within a slatted panel exemplifies the project’s versatility, providing an elegant backdrop for online meetings while offering seamless hospitality for guests.
The integration between the living room and kitchen—separated only by a delicate sliding door in custom metalwork and fluted glass—ensures the flow of natural light and a sense of openness throughout the social area. In the kitchen, a tile panel featuring a modernist swallow pattern adds a playful, artistic touch, while the selection of signature designer pieces by Jader Almeida and Sergio Rodrigues reinforces the best of Brazilian sophistication.
